South Slovakian wine-growing area (area: c. 5 463,6ha/13 495acres)
This area stretches throughout the Danube plain at the average altitude about 140 AMSL. It is the warmest of all wine regions in Slovakia having sunny and dry climate and mild winters. The average temperature during the growing season is around 16,9 °C. There are 114 villages, the most important of their wine-growing are Strekov, Mužla and Šaľa. The vineyards grow in light sandy soils which may in some areas change to mid heavy ones. The plentitude of sunshine and rainfall create extraordinary wines of higher natural sugariness as Late harvest, Selected harvest and Selection of berries. The main white varieties are Gewürztraminer, Rheinriesling, Sauvignon blanc, new Slovak crossings such as Devin and Moravian crossing Palava and Chardonnay . From red varieties we have to mention Cabernet Sauvignon, Blafränkisch, Alibernet, St. Laurent and new Slovak crossing Dunaj named after the river which is a natural southern border of this region.
